Are these the stand-alone fixes that then can be deleted or are they now an integral part of the OS and if I delete one of them my framus coil will begin to smoke, the bubble drive will vibrate out of control and every hacker in the universe will be sent an email telling them that I am now fair game and can therefore be hacked to a painful death on the points of their acrid and bloody keystrokes-of-death programs?

Yes, the "remove" option is there and my question is if I "remove" the item am I un-installing the patch or am I just removing the file that created the patch?

It just makes me fearful to see a bunch of 6MB files just sitting there taking up space. I defrag daily and spend a lot of time on housekeeping and it seems to pay off unless I do something stupid like remove a file that looks harmless but is in actuality a key part of something else.

If you want to delete the subfolder that contains the uninstall info, you can do that. If you are using ntfs, there is no need to defrag every day. The ntfs file system is less prone to fragment. Even with fat32 once per week should do it. I'm just your basic paranoid, scizophrenic, manic excessive. Thanks for the advice. One last question.

Do you delete the subfolders? Would you recommend that I delete them or leave them alone? Fortunately, git provides another feature for this precise purpose: tags. Any time you find that you want a bookmark or reference to a particular commit, such as to mark the commit that was used for a deployment, you can add a tag for this purpose.

You could even create a simple command to combine deleting unused branches and adding tags with the same name as the branch if you were so inclined and really did want to track every branch. Microsoft uses tags to good effect in the ASP. NET Core repositories , where you can see the which code was used for a given release.

For example, this is the 1. One disadvantage is that you will break any hyperlinks to the branch's location in GitHub, etc. Personally I very rarely have an permanent links to non-primary branches, and if I did want to link to some work on a given branch, I would most likely do so after it had been made into a pull request in which case I would link to the PR.

That said, this is a potential downside to deleting branches. You can also quickly remove unused branches using git prune. This article has some great tips related to cleaning up branches, including how to use prune, so check it out to learn more.
