How can solids be solid
Water vapour is the gaseous form or state of water. Unlike ice or water, water vapour is invisible. We exhale water vapour whenever we breathe out. We cannot see the water vapour as we exhale, but if we hold our eyeglasses or smartphone to our mouths, we can see the water vapour condensing becoming liquid on these objects. One state is plasma, which naturally occurs in lightning, and we create it in fluorescent light bulbs and plasma TVs.
Another state of matter is Bose-Einstein condensate, but this state only occurs with super-low temperatures. Science knowledge changes as we discover new evidence.

Everything in the world is either a solid, liquid, or gas.
There are certain things that make solids, liquids, and gases different from each other. Some are able to be observed by the naked eye, and some are not.
One characteristic common to all three of the states of matter is that they are all made up of tiny particles called molecules. These molecules are constantly moving, even though we may not be able to see them do this. Whether something has the characteristics of a solid, liquid, or gas depends on how fast all of its molecules are moving.
Adding heat energy to a substance causes its particles to move faster. They move more slowly when heat is taken away. Physical properties of matter begin to change when the particles forming a piece of matter begin moving slower or faster.
When the motion of the particles change enough, matter can change phase liquid, solid, or gas. A solid has a definite shape and can be bent. The particles in a solid are locked in a specific pattern. These particles can only vibrate in their place. In order to melt a solid material, heat must be added to it. The particles in a liquid are packed together more loosely and they are able to slide past one another. In the phase of matter gas, the particles are far apart and they are moving very fast.
Gases are difficult to study because they are difficult to see in the air. Most substances can exist in all three states of matter depending on the temperature. When a substance melts it is changed from a solid to a liquid. An object is changed from a solid to a liquid when energy is added, and the individual particles move so rapidly that they break away from one another. A good example of this would be when ice melts.
When a substance boils, it is changed from a liquid to a gas. When additional heat is added, the particles in a liquid move even faster.
This is when liquid is changed to gas. Condensation occurs when a gas is changed to a liquid, and sublimation is when a solid is changed into a gas or vice versa.
Course of Study Course of Study 13, Investigate physical changes of matter. Collect the materials and divide them up. The solids will already be put in the proper containers. Divide the children into small groups. Have the students study the materials and let them pick them up and explore them to get a feeling of what they are.
Ask the students if they know what the states of matter are. Do they know what solids are? Do they know what liquids are? Do they know what gases are?
