Jan 14, We're glad you learned something new! To begin the origin of the English alphabet, we have to start with the first alphabet.

The first alphabet was developed by the Semitics in Egypt around BC. Moving from this, the Phoenicians developed the first alphabet to be used widespread. Then, around BC or during the 8 th century, the Greeks borrowed the Phoenician alphabet to create their own.

According to fluentfocus. This created an alphabet with a letter for each and every phenome in their language. I found this to be one of the most interesting aspects of my research because the Greeks created a shorter alphabet than, say, hieroglyphics but they were able to cover every part of their language. This alphabet was then transferred into Latin after the Greeks shared with Italy. The English alphabet was then founded off of the Latin template.

Anglo-Saxon Old English was comprised of runes, or symbols for sounds, much like the Latin alphabet so it was easy for them to combine. In this area of my research, I actually found out where W comes from. There was no equivalent for this in Latin so it became a part of the alphabet.

Throughout the next few hundred years, letters were added to the alphabet to create the 26 letters we have now.
