Can you surf in majorca
The sport is practised in mild weather and is a quite dangerous activity, both for those who practice it and for those around the surfer. However, it is strictly forbidden on the most crowded beaches during high season months. Paddle surfing , the modality practised on a large board where you must stand upright while moving with the help of a paddle, has gained popularity on the islands in recent times.
Because it is easy to learn and start practising in a short space of time, which makes it ideal as a new hobby during the holidays. Also, it is a low risk sport, which makes it a good option to practise with the family, in case you travel to Majorca with children. A good idea is to book the activity at one of the many surf schools and choose one of the many coves, only accessible by sea, to practise it while enjoying the scenery and tranquillity.
Lovers of the sea and water sports will not be disappointed in Majorca. In addition to windsurfing, surfing and kitesurfing are also possible in some coves. If you come to Mallorca for windsurfing or kitesurfing, it is imperative that the conditions are right - that means above all: wind.
The wind blows across Mallorca from different directions and with varying intensity. The type of wind that is predominant is known as "Mistral". It blows from a northerly to north-westerly direction and can strike up from seemingly nowhere. In Mallorca the Mistral is known as "Tramantora".
Every now and then thick sheep-like clouds at high altitude give an indication that Tramantora is on its way. The Levant is a wind that blows from the east and occurs mainly between May and October. Some typical signs of this wind are poor visibility and the sky appears full of thin cloud. Poniente is the name of a weak western wind. It blows mainly in the winter months between November and April but most often makes an appearance as the summer turns to winter.
Mallorca also has thermal winds that are known locally as "Embat". For those who would like to get started in the world of surfing, Alcudia and Playa de Muro have everything you need. Here you can find shops and professional surf schools where you can rent a board and even book a group class, or a completely individualised class.
The waves are not always perfect, but the beaches are ideal for beginners because they don't have any dangerous currents. Also, the sea floor slopes gently providing waves that you can surf, but with a frequency that allows you to rest in between, and surf safely.
Cala Mesquida is part of the Levante de Mallorca Natural Park, and there are always good waves to catch here. It's an ideal beach for experienced surfers, as the currents can be strong at times. Remember that if you'd like to stay in this beautiful cove, it's also where our Zafiro Cala Mesquida is located: the best place to relax after an intense day of surfing.
Canyamel beach is a privileged spot, especially in spring and autumn when the waves are really impressive along this coastline. Awaiting the next set wave in Canyamel.
